Bant Birthing Ritual

Overview

Most decks that want to cheat a big creature into play have to build an entire strategy around it. Birthing Ritual asks for none of that. It costs just two mana and feels like an awkward counterspell target due to it doing nothing without an established board.

The strength of Ritual is in its un-interactible Birthing Pod-style effect. Sacrifice triggers and ETB effects will happen regardless of your opponents' interactive spells, so Force of Wills sit in hand while your combo can go off.

Win Conditions

The deck's curve isn't a curve so much as a ladder, and each rung exists because Ritual can climb from it:

1. One-drops. Hydroponics Architect and Phantasmal Shieldback are the bottom rung. They can both block, or sacrifice to find your next creature on the ladder. Eitber way they'll draw you something on exit.
2. Two-drops. Wall of Blossoms, Fear of Change, and Fblthp, the Lost all draw a card or generate a body when they arrive, so climbing the ladder is never card disadvantage. Fear is the premier option as it has a 100% chance of producing a creature on trigger, whereas our main combo can fizzle.
3. Three-drops + More-Drops. Abhorrent Oculus costs three but has a steep additional cost that we don't need to pay if we just put it into play. A warped Quantum Riddler is additionally great fodder for Birthing Ritual or Fear of Change, as it's considered a 5 drop even when warped.

End Step Decisions

Your 7 card peek is done before you have the option to sacrifice a creature - so avoid making a mistake, especially on online clients where it is easy to close the dialog and forget what you are supposed to sacrifice.

As the end step is where the majority of your work is done, hold your mana up for Force of Will and Flare of Denials to protect Birthing Ritual entry, and then protect your board state and let your passive value roll in. This deck rewards a draw-go playstyle after securing its combo pieces.

Manifest Dread Is Fodder, Not Just Damage

It's easy to look at Abhorrent Oculus and see only a 5/5 flying clock. The manifest dread creatures are both extra tempo and good fodder for later sacrifices. Just remember to turn anything up that has a relevant dies trigger.

Cards to Watch

• Endurance: The lone toolbox three-drop and the reason graveyard decks can't just ignore you. Ritual can find it at end of turn for free, or you can evoke it by exiling a green card and blow out a reanimation or Treasure Cruise turn at instant speed.
• Sink into Stupor: A single flex slot that's a land when you need a land and a bounce spell when you need to break up a lock. Costs nothing to include and is never truly dead.
